Benefits of Outdoor Decking Solutions

A well-planned deck can provide a defined, useful surface that connects different parts of your outdoor environment. It can also help organise the backyard and create a setting that suits your household's needs.

• Expanded outdoor living: Create a dedicated area for relaxing, dining or enjoying time outdoors.
• Better space organisation: Use decking to distinguish entertaining areas from lawns, garden beds and other outdoor features.
• Design flexibility: Plan a deck to suit the available space, preferred layout and intended activities.
• Connection with the home: Position decking to provide a convenient transition between indoor rooms and the backyard where site conditions allow.
• Compatibility with landscaping: Combine decking with suitable lawns, planting, pathways, fences and retaining walls.
• Material choices: Consider decking materials and finishes according to your preferred appearance and maintenance needs.

Backyard Decking for Outdoor Entertaining

Outdoor entertaining areas need to be comfortable, accessible and suited to the way people use them. A deck can provide a dedicated space for outdoor dining, seating or social gatherings without requiring the entire backyard to be paved. When planned carefully, it can create a natural focal point and help define the main activity area.

Before choosing the dimensions, consider the number of people likely to use the space, the furniture you intend to place on it and the routes people will take between the house and garden. Allowing sufficient clearance around tables, chairs and other outdoor items can make the finished deck easier to use.

Weather exposure is another important consideration for Melbourne outdoor areas. Sunlight, rain and moisture can affect the materials and finishes used in a deck. The design should account for appropriate drainage, suitable construction details and any shade or shelter features being considered. Regular maintenance will also depend on the selected decking product.

Our Outdoor Decking Installation Process

A successful decking project starts with understanding how the space will be used and what the site requires. AFG Fencing takes a practical approach to planning outdoor decking, with attention to layout, materials, access and the construction requirements of the proposed structure.

• Consultation and site assessment: Discuss your ideas, intended use and preferred style while considering the available space and existing site conditions.
• Layout and material selection: Plan the deck's dimensions, access points, surface material and relationship with the house and garden.
• Preparation and construction: Prepare the site and carry out the agreed construction work in line with the design and applicable requirements.
• Finishing and inspection: Review the finished surface, edges, access arrangements and relevant drainage and safety considerations.

What to Consider Before Building an Outdoor Deck

Before construction, consider the deck's intended height, the stability of the ground, exposure to weather and the loads the structure must support. Suitable foundations, framing, fixings and connections are important to the performance of the completed deck. Water drainage and ventilation should also be addressed to reduce avoidable moisture problems.

Building permits or other approvals may be necessary depending on the deck's design, height, location and local requirements. Check relevant boundary restrictions and consider nearby buildings, services and access points. Where the project requires specialist design or approval, consult an appropriately qualified professional before work starts.
